Scumbling

In Sumbling we create several fine circular lines through layering on top off one another. Using the hand in small circular motion, light hand pressure, creates the pattern of circular grainy marks on the paper. It reqires a great amount of patience to create several layer to get a Scumbling effect.

This type of shading works well with Pencil Colors, Oil Pastels as well as Graphite or Charcoal drawings. Darker Values are created through denser Sumbling marks. In Pencil Colors two or three different color tones can be used together to create one pattern. While, in Graphite or Charcoal, pencils of different softness or darkness can be used together to crate the same effect.

Scumbling is widely used to show "texture" in an artwork. It is good to show hair, fur, wool, wood Texture.
